Every learner driver usually wonders about the parameters of driving test and the driving route. His main objective is to master the driving techniques in such a way so as to clear the driving test in first attempt. So here we shall be discussing what is there in a driving test which a learner driver should know well in advance to be successful in his test.
Criteria for driving test
The major criteria for driving assessment are as follows:
-
Car positioning
The examiner will assess you based on where you position the car on the road. This includes where you choose to place the car and drive on the road with respect to other vehicles and the space availability on the road. Let’s say for example, not maintaining proper gap with other vehicles on the road while driving or keeping yourself in other vehicles blind spots is not considered to be the part of a good positioning. We should always be aware of our surroundings while on the road. Various other actions like
keeping a safe distance from the vehicles in front,
distance to the kerb while reverse parking,
taking three point turns or kerb side stop manoeuvres and
driving in the correct/proper lane are also included in positioning testing.
-
Careful management of speed
Maintaining the right speed according to the situation on the road is a vital part of driving. Road condition also impact the speed of the vehicles moving on it. Speed should be managed cautiously on uneven road surfaces. So the correct speed on road depends upon so many factors like space available on the road, relative speed of the other vehicles and our vision.
-
Control on the car
One of the important part of assessment is the capability of the driver to control the car. A driver should be able to maintain and operate efficiently the different parts like steering, clutch, gears, accelerator, brakes, etc. The other things that should not be overlooked are driver’s posture, mirror and seat positioning, putting seatbelts, etc.
-
Perception of danger/hazard
You are assessed based on your reaction to any sort of danger in your surroundings. It won’t be always necessary to encounter such type of situations during all parts of the test. Generally, there will be a marking based on your response to such situations.
-
Appropriate Decision making
A learner driver is assessed based upon his decision making while crossing at an intersection, changing lanes or overtaking other vehicles on road. Adequate gap and proper timing is necessary to be maintained at all times, especially whenever a blind spot situation happens. Most learner drivers usually make mistakes in these type of situations.
In addition to above criteria, assessment is based on the driver’s performance during other manoeuvres like making a three point turn, reverse parallel parking, angle parking, stopping at kerb side, etc.
Routes for driving test
The testing routes for driving test are specially designed. Each test location has a number of routes where the examiner can properly evaluate the driving skills of the learner driver.
The best way is to have a good practice of driving in all type of situations and all types of road conditions. The following tasks can be asked to perform during a driving test:
- Stopping at stop signs
- Crossing roundabouts
- Changing lanes on multi-lane and busy roads
- Maintaining speed limits
- Taking turns on busy and narrow roads
- Decision making while over-take or in limited vision situations
